Six Pediatric Dental Tips for Kids

March 26, 2025 9:00 am

Building healthy habits early sets the foundation for lifelong oral health. For kids, the dental journey starts long before the first lost tooth. From teething toddlers to braces-bound preteens, knowing how to guide your child’s dental routine makes a big difference.

Here are a few pediatric-friendly dental tips to help keep those little teeth happy—and visits to the dentist a breeze.

    1. Make Brushing a Fun Routine

Start brushing as soon as that first baby tooth shows up. Use a tiny amount of fluoride toothpaste—just a smear for toddlers. As they get older, a pea-sized amount is perfect.

Young children need help brushing until they have the coordination to do it themselves, usually around age 7 or 8. Make it fun with music, a timer, or a toothbrush with their favorite character.

Aim for brushing twice a day—once in the morning to start the day fresh, and again before bed to keep cavities away.

    2. Flossing Isn’t Just for Grownups

As soon as your child has two teeth that touch, it’s time to start flossing. For little hands, floss picks are easier to manage than string. Daily flossing helps prevent cavities between the teeth—something brushing alone can’t do.

    3. Snack Smart

Limit sugary snacks and drinks, especially sticky candies or juice that coats teeth. Offer tooth-friendly choices like cheese, crunchy fruits, and veggies. Water is the best drink between meals—it helps rinse away food and keeps mouths hydrated.

    4. Watch for Signs of Grinding

If your child wakes up with jaw soreness or you hear them grinding at night, mention it at their next visit. Early intervention can help avoid wear and discomfort.

    5. Don’t Skip Checkups

Even if everything looks fine, kids still need regular dental visits every six months. These visits let your dentist monitor growth, apply fluoride, and catch tiny issues before they grow.

    6. Thinking About Braces? Ask About an Ortho Consult

If your child has crowding, bite issues, or gaps, it might be time to consider an orthodontic consultation. Early evaluations—sometimes as young as age 7—can help spot alignment concerns before they become more complicated. Even if treatment isn’t needed right away, your dentist can monitor development and guide you on the best timing for braces or clear aligners.
